Daily goings on of a New York City Train Conductor

Why are all these people staring at me? Do I look weird? What do they want? Do they want me to entertain them with a pleasant smile, a nice voice? Do they want to hear the redundant announcement and laugh at the robotic sounding: "This is Main Street" This is a Brooklyn-bound "X" Train. Transfers are available for the "X" train. Stand clear of the closing doors please.
How long do they want me to wait for them to finish their conversation in the door. For their kiss. Why don't they know where they are going before they board a train? A train is like any other vehicle in life: one must know where one wants to go specifically before one attempts to go there. This philosophy will lead to success, while not knowing will lead to haphazardness, luck, and chance. Things one can not count on. But, Ah , Yes! Most people live in the latter realm.

So I am needed. But if I am needed why ask someone else for directions after I have given them directions. There are some who test my knowledge by asking what's the quickest way to get to the "X" train, and upon receiving my answer state but isn't this way quicker? If I take the"X" train and transfer for the"X" train. Isn't that quicker than your way? What's up with that? If you know don't ask?

Now there are people who genuinely need me. People who are illiterate. Who can not read our map. Understand the signs on the train, on the platform. Someone asked me an incredible question I wish to share. There situation was they would take the southbound train all the way to the southbound terminal to go Manhattan. They wanted to know if this was the only way to get to Manhattan. One must know that trains travel from point a to point b and back and forth. Usually if there is a norhtbound train, there is a southbound train(east and west also). This must be a result of illiteracy, or bad signs, or both. Or it was just a test . Possibly our signs need to be more colorful. Red with black or green letters or Green with yellow letters. Perhaps. But it seems black and white just ain't getting the job done.

As always these views do not reflect the views of the M.T.A. New York City Transit or its affiliates.
